national conference of artistsMichigan
The Michigan chapter of the National Conference of Artists was founded in 1974 under the leadership of NCA regional coordinator, Evangeline J. Montgomery. The charter members were Edsel Reid, Margaret Montgomery, Robert Brewer, Eddie Rivera, Kwesi Asante, Aaron Ibn Pori Pitts, Adebayo Ni Yonu, and Shirley Woodson. The Mission of NCA Michigan is to preserve, promote and develop African American culture through the visual arts; and to foster the creative forces of artists emanating from the African American and African World Experience. Our organization creates networks with artists throughout Michigan, the United States, the Americas, Europe and Africa. This global view represents the broad perspective of inclusion in the arts.
Currently in the NCA Michigan galleryEvery year, March is designated as Women’s History Month—a time to honor the history, contributions, and achievements of women across generations. The National Conference of Artists Michigan Women’s History Exhibition celebrates artwork created by and centered on women, their identities, experiences, and cultural impact.
This year’s exhibition, “Fortitude,” features work by more than 20 artists exploring themes of strength, resilience, perseverance, and inner resolve. Through painting, sculpture, photography, collage, and mixed media, the exhibition reflects the enduring power of women to navigate adversity, nurture community, and transform personal experience into creative expression.
